Kwere Spoon (LMCL-019)

The Kwere tribe are found in the Ukerewe Island in Lake Victoria carved wooden figures appear to have been effigies of deceased chiefs. Other examples of wood sculpture, including figures and masks, are known, some showing possible influences from the Luba of the Democratic Republic of the Congo.  Spoons like this are given by the women of the society to the most hospitable, talented and popular woman in society and act as a sort of ‘challenge cup’ with a new illustrious owner year to year.African spoons symbolize social values such as compassion and social responsibility. Spoons are primarily used as status symbols and therefore at the same time typically have sculptural qualities
