The Kusu is a small ethnic group in the eastern Democratic Republic of Congo and most of their sculptures share a similarity to their neighbours like the Luba, Songye, and Hemba. This particular sculpture has a conical base that supports a slender trunk with massive rounded shoulders, flanked by arms ending in large hands resting on the side of the abdomen. The statue is crowned by a small head with a triangular face plan wearing a goatee. The kusu people used sculptures as power figures and as ancestral figures too. This piece is locally referred to as a Kasongo Mwembe Sculpture. The following figure has a shinny brown patina and shows signs of age and usage.
