Karamojong Walking Stick (LMCL-072)

The Karamojong or Karimojong, are an ethnic group of agro-pastoral herders living mainly in the north-east of Uganda. Their language is also known as Karamojong or Karimojong and is part of the Nilo-Saharan language group. They are found in the Kotido and Moroto districts in the northeastern part of Uganda. The walking stick was once indispensable to men’s formal attire. The walking stick was a richly carved ornamental object and it is thought that the chiefs of Africa and other far distant countries made them fashionable. They have had a religious function like Moses’ staff and have also served as a symbol of authority among tribal peoples. This is a long old stick with a curved handle at the top, it has a brown patina and visible signs of old age.
