This wooden shield originates from the Karamojong. They are Nilotic-speaking agro-pastoral herders of Ateker ethnic group living mainly in the north-east of Uganda. The Karamajong are mainly a pastoralists community with a recent history of war. They live in a hostile, harsh society because of their nomadic lifestyle characterized by conflicts and raids to their neighbours.
The Karamajong regalia included wooden shields that played a protective role during raids and wars. It has white paint drawn lines and brown patina. A handle running centrally down the shield. The shield looks visibly old, visible signs of wear and frequent usage.
