Hemba Sculpture (LMIN-030)

The Hemba are located along the Congo River in the Democratic Republic of Congo. The Hemba art forms are closely linked to Luba art. Hemba sculptures were often used as portraits of specific ancestors, they were beautified according to the moral qualities of the ancestors. This is a small beautiful miniature sculpture traditionally carved with a stylized head with an elaborate hairstyle, with hands placed on either side of the belly, it indicates that the ancestor is watching over the clan. It has a khaki patina and has visible signs of wear due to usage and old age.
