The Hemba are located along the Congo River in the Democratic Republic of Congo. The Hemba art forms are closely linked to Luba art. Hemba sculptures were often used as portraits of specific ancestors, they were beautified according to the moral qualities of the ancestors. This a beautiful traditionally carved Hemba sculpture of a stylized head with an elaborate hairstyle, with hands placed on either side of the belly, it indicates that the ancestor is watching over the clan. It has a dark patina and has visible signs of age.
