The Hemba are located along the Congo River in the Democratic Republic of Congo. The Hemba art forms are closely linked to Luba art. Hemba sculptures were often used as portraits of specific ancestors, they were beautified according to the moral qualities of the ancestors. This a beautiful traditionally carved male Hemba sculpture of a stylized head with an elaborate hairstyle, its hands are placed on either side of the belly, this indicates that the ancestor is watching over the clan. It has a brown patina and has visible signs of age.
