The Hemba are located along the Congo River in the Democratic Republic of Congo. The Hemba art forms are closely linked to Luba art. Hemba sculptures were often used as portraits of specific ancestors, they were beautified according to the moral qualities of the ancestors. This sculpture is a beautiful traditionally carved piece with hands placed on either side of the belly, it indicates that the ancestor is watching over the clan. The following is a interesting male hemba sculpture with a dark patina and looks visibly old due to extensive usage.
