Hemba Sculpture (CSTA-001)

The Hemba are located along the Congo River in the Democratic Republic of Congo. Hemba art forms are closely related to Luba art. Most Hemba sculptures were portraits of specific ancestors. They were beautified according to the moral qualities of the ancestors. This sculpture is a beautiful traditionally carved piece with hands placed on either side of the belly. This indicates that the ancestor is watching over the clan. Has an elaborate hairstyle coiffure popular among the Luba women.  It has a dark patina and shows visible signs of age.
