The Hemba are located along the Congo River in the Democratic Republic of Congo. The Hemba art forms are closely linked to Luba art. The hemba made two types of masks, the first type is carved in the form of an asymmetrical human face with a small mouth, a linear nose, and slanted eyes, these masks are rare. The second type is the So’o type, the term so’o refers to a chimpanzee, the Hemba do not consider a chimpanzee sympathetic and it is avoided. The facial features on the mask represented something strange and horrible. This mask was used during funeral ceremonies as a process of reconciliation between the dead and the living. This following mask is carved out of hardwood, has a dark patina, pointed triangular forehead, crescent-shaped mouth, and a pointed nose.
