The Hemba are located along the Congo River in the Democratic Republic of Congo. The Hemba art forms are closely linked to Luba art. Extensive Hemba sculptures were often used as portraits of specific ancestors, they were beautified according to the moral qualities of the ancestors.
This is a remnant of an old Hemba sculpture of a stylized head with an elaborate hairstyle, crafted from hardwood with a dark patina and has visible signs of age.
