The Hemba are located along the Congo River. in the Democratic Republic of Congo. The Hemba art foams are closely linked to Luba art. This beautifully carved spoon has a wonderful patina and the head of a Hemba woman. The face appears to be that of a female ancestor. It is a tradition that one elder woman of the tribe holds such a spoon which denotes her as an excellent hostess, cook, role model and one who excels at all of her duties as a woman. In her later years, she picks her successor and passes the spoon on to the young woman who is most deserving. This is truly an amazing piece, showing the importance of this position through the beauty of the spoon.
