This rare fine headrest originates from the Dinka tribe from Southern Sudan. They are a group of nomadic pastoralists. They are famous for traditional utilitarian and ethnic objects including headrests. The variations among the headrests are as plentiful as their uses, they differ in accordance with age, gender, wealth and status of the user.
Such figurative headrests have ethnographic characteristics. The horizontally curved flat platform rests on columns that provide stability. The owner of this headrest was a powerful man. This piece has wonderful brown patina and shows signs of usage and old age. Like most tribal art objects that are authentic, this shows traces of wear and natural abrasion.
