This is an elegant T-shaped headrest from the Arussi tribe located in Ethiopia. The Aussi art is closely similar to their surrounding neighbours, the Afar, Me’en, Dassenach and Elmore. Ethiopian headrests are grouped into different visual and structural styles. The most popular is the columned piece with a curved platform and circular base and also the pillow in the form of a block. The variations in these headrests are plentiful and so are the uses.
This headrest is distinctively designed with a curved platform with two columns linking the platform to the circular base. The representations of these headrests in the Arussi society are to be found with the further study but revolves around identity, status and age/gender differentiation. The fine headrest has a wonderful brown patina, smooth texture, carved in hardwood. It shows signs of usage and old age.
